Improved Version of the Mossberg 500
The Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag is a pump action shotgun built for a 3.5-inch chamber 12-gauge ammunition. It’s a heavier and bigger version of the Mossberg 500. The company redesigned and went back to the drawing board to create a more improved firearm on this one.
Mossberg was successful in making significant changes to reduce the felt recoil as well as refine this gun’s accuracy. As a shotgun designed and built for the harder-hitting load, the 835 Ulti-mag surpassed a lot of shooter’s expectations for a turkey hunting gun made specifically for this purpose.
This 5-shot pump action turkey gun is available in barrel lengths of 20, 24, and 28 inches. Camouflage is the usual preference for turkey guns, but this model also features blue and matte blue finishes. It fires 12-gauge (3-1/2″ chamber) with dual bead and adjustable sights. The stocks are either synthetic or the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag wood stock making the overall weight of this firearm 7.25-8.7 lbs.
Ease of Use and Performance
The 835 Ulti-mag is set out to pattern at 40 yards and shoots accurately at this distance. The balance is superb, and you can really feel the reduced recoil from what a 12-gauge ammunition’s usual kicks feel when firing. The next shot is also quicker due to what Mossberg did to the ports and has improved durability than most of its predecessors.
Mossberg 835 Pros and Cons
This shotgun features balance ballistic performance and have interchangeable choke tubes constructed for its barrel. Any experienced shooter firing a few rounds of the Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag will immediately notice how good it feels shooting 12-gauge ammo. You can also purchase this shotgun with pistol grips usually seen on tactical guns for better control.
Everything about this gun is great except having to remove the buttstock to fully disassemble the gun. Also, the ambidextrous safety slide on the top tang is too far to reach when you’re in a strong-hand grip.
Overall Verdict and Price
With all these fine specs and improved performance for a turkey gun, the Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag price at $630 is definitely not too much to ask. Turkey hunters will find it meets their needs in the hunting grounds, yet it was made as an excellent home defense gun, too. Just imagine how crooks will react when you’re firing 5 rounds of 12-gauge ammo in quick succession!
