Here’s Why You Need To Bulk Up On Ammo Purchases Now
Bulk up on ammo purchases, while you still can.
The current state of politics, and, perhaps even worse, the future political environment concerning guns and ammo demands attention by all who want to continue feeding their favorite firearms. Here are some thoughts on ammunition for many contingencies a gun owner could face.
As a current firearms instructor in both civilian and law enforcement venues, it never ceases to amaze me as to how little thought is given to ammo and its availability. In many instances students often arrive to train, reporting they have limited ammo for that day’s range work because they could not find it at the local retailer. Likewise, ammo cost and supply are a constant discussion in the law enforcement arena.
With increasing frequency, ammo is becoming the focus of control efforts by political and governmental entities that view guns and all associated with them as evil.

The following are just a few of the challenges we are facing when it comes to ammunition acquisition—
Taxation:
Ongoing discussion or current taxation on every round of ammunition in states such as California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, and of course the recent tax of guns and ammo in Seattle, Washington…just to mention a few!
A Fingerprint or License Required:
Lots of discussion about these control efforts in states such as California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts and others.
Environmental:
This claim does not seem to ever go away as it rears its ugly head from time to time. In a nutshell, the shaky theory is that lead based projectiles will compromise certain wildlife species and the human race if ingested or physical exposure occurs. The end result is lead based ammo being restricted or illegal in certain areas or states.
Public Safety:
Recent attempts to eliminate .556 green tip or other “ballistic tip” ammo because it could penetrate all law enforcement body armor. Any high velocity rifle round has this capability…it’s just political posturing.
Quantity restrictions:
There are already many restrictions on purchases of large quantities of ammo via the internet in some states. In addition, some retailers restrict how much of certain calibers one may purchase at any given time. This is still commonplace for .22 ammo.

Import restrictions:
There is a lot of continuous discussion on limiting or banning importation of foreign made ammo in such highly used cartridges as 7.62×39 and 5.45×39.
Non-availability:
Ammo manufactures may limit how often they produce certain calibers based on the market demand. This means you better have laid in a good supply of all necessary reloading components if you need a particular, less common caliber. Two that I have personally encountered difficulty in finding factory ammo are: 218 Bee and 348 Winchester. To my knowledge, neither are currently in production. And one that’s around but darn hard to find, is .22 magnum!
How do we combat purchasing difficulty?
Determine what your needs and use for ammo are. And, how much is enough. For example, uses and needs in my world encompass the following:
Hunting, shooting sports/competition, training, defensive, bartering/investment and leaving something for kids/grandkids when they find ammunition even harder, costlier and perhaps commercially unavailable to obtain in the future.
Some Thoughts on Storage:
Many methods exist for long term storage. Two key elements to remember, is to keep them cool and dry! Also consider not storing all of your ammo in one location; spread it out. This provides some degree of insurance against fire, theft, or some other catastrophic event.
Bottom line, if you want to have ammunition available to you and yours at all times, you best have a continuous plan for acquiring and replacing it. Just remember only 4 to 5 years ago, it wasn’t only rimfire ammo that became scarce…most pistol and rifle calibers were also hard to find!

Believe this or not this is a very true story.
I was in the Army for 20 years. I was in the very high echelon of the military in that I had unfettered access to the decision makers. One day I was approached with a question as to “How eliminate the use of fire arms in America?” I ask the question, “Would this be a long term goal or a short one?” The answer was “Long term.” I said, “That is simple. Just don’t make the ammunition anymore for any of the weapons you care to take off the market be it hand guns, rifles or assault rifles.” Boy, did I get a lot laughter. My peers thought my answer was really stupid. I just told the room to stop and think about it for a moment. Then they stopped laughing at me.
I was asked another question as to how I would eliminate the ammunition that is currently in the market place. I told them that I would severely limit the production of said ammo by closing down the plant that makes the ammunition. Again, I was met with laughter. I told them that with lead being a toxic substance it should be easy to close a plant down. Once more the laughter stopped. I now had their attention. Then I said that the government can go on a buying spree and soak up the ammunition on the open market despite the millions of dollars it would cost. By putting ammunition in short supply, you put the squeeze on those that want or need it for their weapons. People usually don’t think twice about using their supplies up when they think that they can still get more. So with ammunition in short supply you eliminate the glutton market of ammunition. I suggested that the excess ammunition can be purchased for the military and any and all law enforcement that is part of the Federal Government. I then said next, you can limit the amount of ammo that hits the market by providing a valid identification, permit, or permission through the State then Federal Government. By tightening background checks, limiting the amount a person can purchase you stem the supply of ammunition on the open market.
Although my peers thought that I was crazy for suggesting how to eliminating ammunition from the market place, the powers to be apparently didn’t think so. They had the EPA close down the last remaining lead plant in America. The EPA said that lead had contaminated the surrounding area and was endangering the local water shed and supply. Then through Home Land Security, they purchased over 2 billion rounds of ammunition that was on the open market. Now if you want ammunition it has to be imported. There is talk of strong background checks via a FBI computer up link. Also there is a State initiative to have the requester for ammunition to be certified to carry a weapon by having a card indicating that they went through a firearms course. The course depending upon how the individual States wish to handle their perspective goals.
I was in a think tank for the US Army. Unfortunately it never occurred to us that we were going against the Constitution of the United States of America or the American people. It was our jobs to provide various possible scenarios that can or could occur. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think what I had suggest would come to light much less be used against the citizens of my own country. You see we were under the impression that these tactics would be used against our enemies, (Desert Storm era). There are more munitions in the Iraq region for various weapons that you can ever think of. Ever house hold has several assault weapons, French, Swedish, English, Russian and Chinese. They have munitions that is over 50 years old. This is what I thought that we were to eliminate the introduction of the new and modern ammunition to the region or so we were told.
I can’t tell you how discussed I was when I heard how the Federal Government turned my suggestions against the American public. All I can do is to apologize and do my best to ensure that this doesn’t come to be by fighting the system with every step they take against the “People.” I just wanted to get this story out there to show you how our Government works, always trying to take advantage of the American people whenever, where ever possible. It has been 20 years since I had left the Federal Government and I can now speak out without fear of retribution. I am sorry.
