National Gun Violence Awareness Day: An Appropriate Response

June 2nd is slated to be the first ever national gun violence awareness day. A few semi-popular celebs are going to be in attendance with Mrs. Obama to deliver a speech to help bring gun violence to a head. And, of course, it will all be done in the name of the children. Every town for Gun Safety (EGS) is asking for everyone to wear orange to show support for their cause.

The only issue, is that there is no such thing as “gun violence.” An inanimate object, such as a gun has no awareness of self, nor can it decide that it wants to be violent. So we recommend having a “national criminal awareness day” or, “national gang banger awareness day” or, “national no body loved me when I was a kid so I grew up to be an idiot day.”

Please don't twist my sarcasm to say that I don't care about little kids. It is a sad tragedy each time a child, or anyone for that matter, dies because a criminal used a gun. Or, a knife. Or, in a car accident. Or, by drowning. Or, by an incurable disease. Or, by any of the other countless ways a human being can die. Catch my drift?

The Bloomberg funded EGS seems to think that responsible gun owners want nothing more than to hurt everyone they meet, to include little kids. Of course, if you have any sense about you, you realize that the last thing anyone wants is to see little kids getting hurt, no matter the reason.

In fact, one of the primary reasons any sensible gun owner actually owns guns is for the protection of life. Personally, I own guns because my sense of duty carries over from my time in the USMC. I don't just own guns for my family's protection. I own guns because if I see you getting attacked, I'll save your life as well.

What this means, is that at the point of attack, it doesn't matter which side of the fence you're on. It doesn't matter if you're on the left or the right. It doesn't matter if you are pro gun, pro abortion, pro gay marriage, just got done stomping on my American flag or any of the other controversies making headlines each day of the week.

All that matters at the time of an attack is innocent life.

My goal from that point on is to save you from someone who feels entitled to what you have. It doesn't matter if it is something you own, or your very body. While not always the case, people who try to take from others are usually very bad people. If they are willing to point a gun, knife or two extended fingers shaped like a gun at you to get something from you, they are willing to kill you for it.

I know that there are people all over the country who think just like I do. These are people you walk past every day, carrying concealed guns who are willing to protect and serve even though it isn't their job. It is a strange phenomenon, but their guns never decide to conduct some “gun violence.” They don't de-holster themselves and start shooting at innocent people just because they can. Because, in reality, they cannot.

I suggest that in reaction to this gun violence day, we do not wear orange as EGS as asking. Instead, let's wear our concealed weapons. That way, should the need arise, and innocent life is threatened, we can respond appropriately.
