Marlin Model 1895
One thing I like about the Marlin 1895 is the ability to shoot a follow-up without having to point the barrel away when cocking. It’s because of its lever-action mechanism that allows you to hold the gun with one hand while you cock it with the other. Furthermore, the gun weighs 7.5 pounds which are just around the average, thus, carrying it around isn’t too punishing. If you’re out to stroll in the woods to scout, I’d prefer the Marlin 1895 any day.

The Mossberg 500 is the most widespread shotgun there is to date. However, it’s not popular for no reason at all. It is, by far, the most reliable and smooth shotgun I’ve ever handled. Furthermore, there are a few varieties, stock options, and barrel lengths. Once you’re up against a black bear, you’ll be thankful you’ve got the Mossberg 500 by your side!
GUN CARRIER READER'S POLL:
WHAT WOULD YOU DO AGAINST AN ACTIVE SHOOTER?
"On the news recently I watched a nut job pull a gun out and open fire on a crowd of innocent folks out enjoying themselves…
I watched dozens of fit and healthy men just dive for cover, helpless to do anything to protect the crowd…
I thought of what I would do. How I would react. Would I have the shooting skills my country needs in these uncertain times?"

Another hunting shotgun to consider is the Remington 870 that’s cheap but reliable. If you’re not really into waterfowl, it’s less likely that you’d have to fire the Remington 870. The 870 serves only as a backup gun in case you get attacked by some wild animal but I tell you, it’s got excellent recoil management. In addition, the overall feel of the gun is superb. I had a chance to shoot this gun at the range and everything feels right from the slide-action, recoil, and even just holding it gives you confidence.
- Offset flashlight mount which fits most full size shotguns such as Remington 870/1100, Mossberg 500/590, Benelli M4 (except SuperNova), and Winchester 1200/1300/Defender
- Requires mounting to barrel AND magazine tube with 1.75 inches of free mounting space in front of action with no obstructions such as a heatshield
- Attaches to either side of shotgun making it configurable for left or right-handed shooters
These are the best hunting guns in the business and in their respective categories. Defending yourself while scouting in the wilderness is very important. Which one do you have or plan on having?
