No, The Gadsden Flag Is Not A Racist Symbol…Here’s Why

Hoe-Lee-Crap. Some racially charged Americans from around the country dun just lost their effing minds. People are now inflamed over the Gadsden Flag, saying that it is a symbol of racism. Words escape me right now. I don't even know what to say. Instead of a snarky article making fun of the pukes in charge of this country, I'll just give a history lesson on the flag, what it stands for, and how important it is for us to not forget our heritage.

The Gadsden Flag has absolutely nothing to do with slavery or racism. In fact, just the opposite is true. It was originally designed as a beacon of freedom in the revolutionary war. Patriotic Americans felt like they were slaves to the British, and wanted to fight against it. They wanted their freedom and were willing to die for it.

This flag was adopted by the original Navy and Marines as their first battle flag. What did they do? They performed battle with the Brits to win our freedom. Never was it used as a symbol of hatred or racism. People, it really is time to grow up, put your big boy or girl pants on and start standing for something real instead of made-up offenses.

Let's move on:

Why was the rattlesnake used?

The answer to that is quite easy, actually. This snake doesn't strike unless provoked, and never backs down. Before it is stepped on, it lets you know that it's there by shaking the rattle, warning you of doom. If you ignore it, it'll bite you in the ass—plain and simple. The same was true of the people who originally used it. The original snake had 13 rattles, one for each of the original colonies. Never was it intended to be a symbol of racism.

There is one account from someone named the “Anonymous Guesser” who witnessed the Marines banging on a drum with the rattlesnake on it while they were on their way to fight for American freedom. It was later learned that this anonymous person was likely Ben Franklin. The rattlesnake wasn't just used for battle, though. By the time the revolutionary war was in full swing, it was on everything, to include money.

I suspect that people are confused about history. Why? Because it isn't being taught in school anymore. When history isn't taught it gets forgotten. When it gets forgotten, it gets repeated. I look around at the state of the country and fear that we are in the process of repeating some very big mistakes.

To make matters worse, everyone is so easily offended that they can't even be looked in the eyes anymore. This causes everyone to walk on eggshells. Some people even look for reasons to be offended. Listen, if I say something that genuinely offends you, fine. Please tell me about it. But if you go looking for a reason to be offended like what's happening in the world today, you need to do some serious introspection.

Anyway, I digress…

Today, the Gadsden Flag is still a symbol of freedom. It is a flag flown by patriots who are tired of being oppressed. This is one of the ways they let everyone know where they stand. It is not a symbol of racism. Can it be flown by racists? Sure it can—and I'm sure it is. But that's not what it stands for.

Never will you see one on a progressive liberal's lawn—because most of them are fine with the direction our country is headed in. Many of them are fine with certain freedoms, like the right of the people to keep and bear arms, being taken away. And, you can be positive that they are fine with the freedom of speech being taken away, as they themselves try tirelessly to oppress those of us who try to speak freely.

Times sure are tough right now. Many people can't remember a time when we were so close to the edge of a cliff, ever being pushed closer to tumbling off. It pissed off a lot of Americans when the Confederate Flag came under attack, but not enough people where pissed to really have anything take hold. This time, it's a different flag. This one represents freedom and I suspect that many patriots won't be willing to lie down and let this slide. Only time will tell, though.
