One of the most important things you could ever do as a gun owner who also has children, is educate and lock. What do I mean? If you have kids in your house on at least a semi-regular basis, you need to educate them about firearms. And, taking it a step further, you need to keep your guns locked away from prying eyes and hands.
If the irresponsible gun owning parents of the 8th grader from Michigan did that, this kid never would have brought a gun to school to begin with.
Thankfully, this kid didn't actually hurt anyone with the handgun. As of right now, we don't know the real reason why he brought it to school to begin with, and has since been suspended from school.
However, those involved with the investigation believe that the student never intended to harm anyone, but was just trying to show off. In other words, this kid made a bad decision. Was it loaded? Who knows. But, thankfully the kid kept his finger off the trigger and didn't shoot anyone, accidentally or otherwise.
Unfortunately, in a world where responsible people are trying to prove that we can be just that: “responsible”, someone has to go and screw it up on a regular basis. This brings me full circle and back to the original point. If you have guns and children in your house, educate them.
If the teenager in question even had the slightest clue how dangerous a firearm can be in the hands of the untrained, he likely would never have even touched it. And he definitely wouldn't have been able to get his hands on it if it was locked away.
Let this be a lesson folks, educate the children in your life about firearms and lock them up until they can safely operate one. Handgun safes are abundant enough that you can purchase on the cheap from the comfort of your own home and have it delivered straight to your door. This is one of the first things that you need to have, to keep your children safe.

How to train for self-defense.
Guns are great tools when used responsibly. They keep our loved ones safe and help to protect our property. God forbid that a child gets a hold of your firearm, if they do then I trust they have been properly educated and trained in safe firearm use.
Even better is to remove the possibility of this happening entirely. There is an accidental shooting by a child every 36 hours! Yes… every day and a half a child somewhere in America shoots someone. Click here to get more child gun safety information and also to see how having a high quality, safe and secure handgun safe can easily prevent this from happening in your home.
