Concealed Carry vs. Open Carry

Open Carry and Concealed Carry have always been somewhat of a sensitive topic. So we want to give you some techniques, tips and options that may present you in a different light to the general public. So be sure to check what the gun laws are for your state and city. Check your local ordinances that pertain to open carry and always remember that you are representing everyone who carries when you go out with a gun.

Open Carry vs. Concealed Carry

Disclaimer: This is not an article about open carry being a bad thing. If you want to open carry then by all means do so. If you do choose to do so be sure to be aware and courteous of others.

Concealed Carry

If you are concealing then you don't want people to know that you are carrying. A lot of the holsters for concealed carry are in your waistband with no retention devices. This means that you can easily grab and draw your gun very quickly. This also means that anyone that knows you have a firearm can grab and draw your gun quickly as well.

If you have a Concealed handgun you can throw a vest or jacket on top of your outfit. What you want to do is lessen who you are in the public eye. A vest or a jacket isn't a very strong safety device but its an easy and quick way to be sure that no one knows you are carrying. It gives you relatively quick access to your weapon and is another slight level of security if someone wants to take your gun.

Another type of concealed carry is simply a pistol in your pocket. If you have a small handgun you can simply place it in your pocket. Usually you are going to want to have one that has an external safety so that no accidents occur. If you are placing the handgun in your pocket then be sure that it is the only thing in your pocket. You don't want keys, coins or whatever else to possibly obstruct your use of the gun. It is even better if you have a little holster to place the gun in, which will make sure that nothing gets in the way. Most of the pocket holsters have a grippy surface which makes it easier to draw the gun and keeps the holster in the pocket.

You want to be sure to practice and train drawing your concealed carry gun. Many people won't train at all which is not smart at all. You want to drive fire it a lot, reload and shoot it well. When you do train on your firearm be sure to train with the type of round you are going to use when you actually carry. Don't use a low quality ammo for training and then go out and use a fancy hollow point that you have never shot before. You want to know how the gun is going to function.

Open Carry

If you are open carrying, everyone knows who you are. They see and know that you have a firearm. This can make you an easy target. If you are going to be open carrying you are going to want a holster that has a retention device. This will keep your firearm much safer than if you didn't have one. You still run the risk of your gun and holster being ripped off your belt. Open carrying will always draw a lot of attention to your person. The great thing about open carry is that you can carry much higher power weapons.

When you are open carrying always keep in mind your posturing and firearm placement. If your hand is on your gun people are going to perceive you as a threat. If you are hold an AR-15 with your hands on the gun people are going to perceive you as a threat. If you are relaxed and aren't grasping onto your gun you aren't going to come off as a huge threat.
