This won't make any sense until you check out part 1 of “Self Defense for Women: What Would You Do Different?” here, first.

Self Defense for Women: What Would You Do Different? (Part 2)

One of the men I look up to with a tremendous amount of respect once said: “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet” – General Mad Dog Mattis.

What does this mean?

On its most basic level, you need to treat everyone with basic human respect. But, once someone crosses that line, you need to take him out. Now, I don't mean that you need to take him out for dinner. You should already know how to kill them. You should have a “plan to kill everybody you meet.”

What this equates to, is something we like to call situational awareness. Our poor lady friend in my last fiction piece was so overloaded with stress, that she didn't pay any attention to the movement she saw out of the corner of her eye. She wrote it off as a cat, when in fact, it was someone who wanted to hurt her.

Of course, it was a piece of fiction that I refused to finish because I just didn't want to go there. But, as the stats pointed out in the beginning, lots of people get molested each and every year. She wouldn't have been made a victim if she was aware of her surroundings.

She wouldn't have put stock into the fact that she lives in a “safe” cookie cutter development where there is a veil pulled down over her eyes that says, There is no crime here. You. Are. Safe. Besides, everyone is just a shout away, and they will come to my rescue in time, should the need arise.

Safety is nothing more than perception that can be taken away with one simple act of stupidity.

Had she been aware of her surroundings, she could have seen the man coming for her, made the realization that he was out of place at 3AM, and at least be ready for what was coming with her hand on her gun.

Which brings me to my next point. If you remember correctly, the pistol didn't even click when she pulled the trigger. This means that, while she thought she flipped the safety to the “fire” position, she may have actually de-cocked it while it was still in her purse, thus rendering it useless. Or, maybe there was no round in the chamber, as some of the comments in part one pointed out. Either way, she could have fixed the problem before it ever occurred.

This brings me to a bit of a side note, which is strictly my totally accurate opinion on off-body carry. Listen, if you can't carry on your body because of your wardrobe, or any other reason, find a way. There are literally tons of options to carry on-body.

Heck, I've even seen grown men carrying with a fanny pack. Can you imagine how comfortable they are in their own skin to actually wear a fanny pack?

But, I digress…

If you remember, she forgot that the pistol was even in her purse. If she manually holstered her pistol into her corset holster, she'd have known that it was in there. And, it would have been more easily accessible to reach with one hand, while her other arm was in a vise-like grip.

It's never a good idea to carry a weapon until you have become intimately familiar with it.

When you are placed in an incident when you have to use your firearm, your muscle memory may need to take over because your brain doesn't function properly. But, if you don't even know how your firearm works before you find yourself in an instance like this, you'll be in a lot of trouble.

Remember, she wanted to scream, but couldn't even produce the sound to do so. She was rightfully very scared, but had no control over her own body.

Unfortunately, I blame her father, which is hard for me to do as a daddy to a couple of beautiful little girls. And, even though I wrote this story, I learned something from it, too. I will never give my child a firearm, even as an adult, and let them run with it. I will force them to practice shooting. Force them to know the weapon inside and out. That way, should the need ever arise, their body will know how to use the weapon, even when their mind has failed, and cannot even get the body to scream.

Here is another quote by General Mattis that goes along with this:

“The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some a******s in the world that just need to be shot. There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.”

Sound Off Gun Carriers! Do you agree with my assessment of this situation? Does the de-cocker or empty chamber theory fit? Or, am I just nuts? Let me know in the comments below. In this story, the Bad Guy would have felt the gun in the corset and quite likely in the side of the chest rig, or on the bra. (Flashbang) If the dude is rt handed, she would have to use her left hand to draw. Not gonna happen while shoved up against a car. If he spun her around, and smacked her face, it’ doubtful she would be able to get to any gun. Seeing him coming towards her and picking up on his intentions might be the only thing to save her. I carry IWB, and practice drawing left handed. Be alert, folks!
