There are some people from both sides of the gun-debating isle who are scratching their heads in confusion concerning Trump’s statement about wanting a sit down with the NRA. Trump said he wanted to talk to them about the “terrorist list” and what they can do about preventing those on it from buying guns. I wanted to tackle this, so we can explain some important issues going on here with that list, and why gun-rights groups, to this point, have been against some parts of it.
Listen, nobody wants terrorists to have guns. Or bomb making equipment, for that matter. I don’t want it, the NRA doesn’t want it, the GOA doesn’t want it, and I can’t think of any sane person who does want a known terrorist to have the ability to buy anything that can take life and further an ideological agenda. But, there’s a problem with how the list is set up, that has never truly been addressed before:
Once you get put on that “no fly list” there is no way of getting off of it. You may be thinking “great, what’s the problem with that?” Well, let’s say that you shared the same name with a home-grown terrorist who was put on that list. But, it didn’t stop there. Since you share the same name, you were also accidentally put on that list.
You don’t know it, so you go to the store to buy a new self-defense handgun—and get denied! You were wrongly put on that list and have no way of coming off of it. Is it rare? Yes, it is. But, does it happen? Yes, it does, and more often than you think.
This is one of the main reasons why gun-rights groups have been against such a law so far. You cannot prove that you are innocent, even if you are. That’s not America…Stuff like that only takes place in countries with an established dictatorship.
If we can get around this problem, I’m sure we’ll be able to move forward to disallow real terrorists from buying a gun, legally. Of course, there’s always the opportunity to buy illegal guns, and criminals know how to do that.
