UTAS UTS-15 Review

We love shotguns, and what better shotgun to review than a tactical shotgun? So today we are going to be reviewing the UTS-15 a tactical shotgun made by UTAS requested by Smith & Wesson in 2006 to develop for police and military. The request that Smith & Wesson had was to have a pump action, tactical shotgun, with low weight.

 1. Specifications

UTS-11

The UTAS – UTS-15 1st Gen

UTAS came up with a 14 +1 capacity, 6.9 pounds unloaded, 28.3-inch bullpup tactical shotgun with a barrel length of 18.5 inches with a standard choke. It has dual, selectable 7 round tube magazines, with a switch to alternate between tubes and a rail for iron or optical sights.

2. Feeding Issues

UTS-2

A round not wanting to feed correctly

The UTAS UTS-15 also had a ton of issues with feeding and extracting. Rounds would feed halfway or eject halfway. This could be due to the fact that the stroke for cycling a round is very short and if you short stroke it might lead to some problems with ejection. If the round did not eject it would then try to either re-feed it or double feed.

 3. Cycling and Mag System

UTS-7

The switch allowing use of either the right or left mag or both

The UTS-15 has an awesome cycling system where it switches from the right magazine to left magazine. If the switch is placed in the middle then it will alternate from tube to tube–right, left, right, left and so on. Otherwise, you can select which magazine you want to use and vary the type of ammo. While firing the gun with the switch selecting the right side the switch actually moved from the right side over to the middle. So if you had two different types of ammo, such as slugs on one side and buckshot on the other, you would then you have no idea what you are shooting, thus defeating the entire purpose of the switch.

  • Will accommodate most side saddles
  • Ambidextrous, with two MOLLE straps

4. Small Torture Test

UTS-3

Testing the shotgun at as many angles as possible

On the UTAS website, the gun was said to be able to be fired from any angle.  The gun performed well until fired almost upside down when the action cover would pop open after firing.

5. Accessories & Parts

UTS-4

Barrel extension allows for tighter groupings

You can purchase a barrel extension for this gun at 7.5 inches. This allows you to keep a tighter grouping and you can go do some skeet shooting if you wanted. This firearm is great because it does have a space for an integrated flashlight or laser with a toggle switch above the grip. Another issue is that the forestock is that it's very slippery. One recommendation for the UTAS UTS-15 is to have a rail so that you can add on a foregrip for better control.

GVN 8 Rounds Gun Ammo Storage Shotgun Shell Holder Adjustable Shooters Forearm orTactical Buttstock Sleeve Magazine Pouch(Black/FDE) (FDE)
  • Versatile: Large capacity to hold 8 shotgun shells, 12-gauge shell holder. You can wear this on your forearm or your buttstock
  • Adjustable: Three elastic straps with hooks and loops, which gives you adjustable fit no matter your forearm is thick or thin
  • Materials: Made of durable high quality 800D nylon with a non-slippery material outside to prevent it from slipping when you move your arms

The Bottom Line

Overall, the gun was just not very reliable and I would not trust it if my life depended on it. The gun was very hard to shoot a full magazine without having to fix a jam of some sort. It does look awesome but whats the point of a great looking gun if it fails to work?

Keep in mind this review is of the first generation of the UTS-15 and UTAS is now in generation 3. Some people are having more success with the gun which may be something to check out in the future. For now, we are left with what seems to be a rushed product, leaving a bad taste in the mouth.

Good review. I’ve seen this weapon in at lgs, but never really gave it a lot of thought. I’m not a big fan of fan of 1 gen weapons due to problems that are manufacturer caused. Your review gave more reasons to bypass this weapon for now.
